The History of Benton Place
About Benton Place - Benton Place located in the heart of Lafayette Square across the street from the North entrance of 30 acre Lafayette Park is one of the oldest private streets in St. Louis. Benton Place was platted in 1868 by noted St. Louis attorney and politician Montgomery Blair and served as a model for other private streets in the City of St. Louis. Benton Place was one of the first private streets to include extensive deed restrictions, including public improvement maintenance assessments, use restrictions, and set back lines.
Rich Architectural Designs of Benton Place - Benton Place is located in the Lafayette Square Historic District and homes renovated in Benton Placeare eligible for assistance under the Missouri Historic Tax Credit Program. Benton Placehas stone pillar monuments marking its entrance and includes a curvilinear, cobblestone drive or boulevard with a landscaped center island. The design of the boulevard for Benton Place was suggested either by landscape architect Maximilian Kern or surveyor Julius Pitzman. Benton Place has varied architectural styles including Second Empire homes with mansard roofs, Italianate mansions, and Victorian Painted Ladies with limestone walls and painted accents.

Benton Place Residents - The original 25 foot lots in Benton Place sold for an unusually high price of $3,000 to $3,500 each. Banker William H. Maurice, paid $75,000 for over twenty-one lots in 1870. Other noted residents of Benton Place included:
- Architect John Maurice who designed at least four houses in Benton Place
- John H. Cavender, real estate partner of Edward S. Rowse who invested heavily in Benton Place lots
- Commission Merchant George Bain
- Bank President James S. Britton
- Bank President Dewitt C. Stone
