Just Another Day...
March 19, 2009, may seem like just any other day to you and me. However, since 1952, the third Thursday of March has been a day of reckoning for medical students. It is Match Day. It is a day when the hopes and dreams of medical students across the United States collide with the cold hard facts of where the graduating medical student has been assigned for their hospital residency program. Although one's medical school education provides the foundation for one's medical career, it is the residency program that often shapes the career of practicing physicans.

And You Thought the BCS System was Bad...
Admittedly, I don't know how this Match Day system really works. However, it has been described as a cross between the BCS bowl selection process and the archaic "Skull & Bones" tap you on the shoulder selection process. Medical students apparently submit their preferences as to hospitals, programs, and locations and hospitals submit their needs and rankings of students based on grades, interviews, recommendations, etc. A computer algorithim then apparently spits out a list of matches between medical students and hospital residency programs. A sealed envelope is then given to the graduating medical student at precisely 11:00 a.m. specifying their assignment to a medical residency program.

A Sealed Fate...
The medical students, after receiving their assignment, are then obligated to attend the residency program to which they have been assigned. The decision is final - no appeal. It is almost unimaginable to believe that your fate is controlled by a computer algorithim. A computer has assigned you a specialty, a residency program, and the place that you will live for the next few years.
Here is the good news...
Congratulations to all the graduating medical students who were assigned to residency programs at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis University Hospital, Cardinal Glennon Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital and the other great teaching hospitals in St. Louis, Missouri. Although a computer may have chosen your residency assignment, you now have a wide selection of housing options located minutes from all major city hospitals to choose from.
