A Brief History - Georgian Revival Architecture
In 1909, the City of St. Louis started construction on City Hospital No. 1. The most prominent building in the City Hospital complex is and remains the Main Administration Building. The Main Administration Building is a five-story red brick building and was designed by architect Albert B. Groves. The architectrual style of the Main Administration Building is Georgian Revival. The key distinguishing characteristic of this architectural style is a large, formal rectangular structure with classic lines and ornamentation. Other distinguishing features include: use of brick building materials, gable or hip style roof, protruding chimneys and dormers, Paladian-style windows, Greek columns, and glass lights on each side and above the front entry door. The Main Administration together with attached East Ward Building and the West Ward Building, shown above, form a large front courtyard that served as the primary entrance for the City Hospital from the opening of the hospital in 1912 to the opening of the Tower Building in 1941. The hospital closed its doors in 1985. In 2006, the Main Administration Building and the attached Ward Buildings were converted to 104 residential, for sale condominiums.
Archtectural Tour

The Main Administration Building has an eleven bay facade capped by a slate hipped roof. The facade is organized into three sections: Second Floor, Third to Fifth Floors, and Sixth Floor.

Second Floor: The first story creates an arcade of round-arched openings. The entrance is an oversized entry door flanked by glass lights on the side and above the entry doors and set under limestone segmental arch. The front entry door is flanked by Corinthian columns.

The bays windows contain Palladian windows.
Third to Fifth Floors:

Sixth Floor: A single window at each bay carries the stone and wood cornice, which separates a low parapet wall. The slate-covered hipped roof has six round dormers and the structure of a central cupola.
In 2001, the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Main Administration and Ward Buildings were converted to 104 condominiums with the first owner moving into the building in February, 2006. Sixteen condominiums units remain.
